One way to back up important data from your smartphone is by creating a copy of these files and/or transferring the files to your other device. In Samsung devices, file transfer can be carried out in different ways. Here’s a step by step guide on how to transfer files from an old Samsung smartphone to the Galaxy S20 through a wired and wireless connection.
The traditional file transfer method is carried out through the use of a USB or wired connection. When new devices were rolled out, a modern file transfer technique was also introduced. And thus, cloud storage is launched.
Cloud storage is defined as a service model in which data is transferred and stored on remote storage systems. Through these systems, you can manage, back up and make your files available to specific users over a network (the internet). While cloud storage seems to be more convenient, there are some aspects that don’t meet every user’s demand. Thus, the traditional file transfer method becomes an alternative.
In Samsung devices, traditional (wired) and modern (wireless) data transfers can be done through the use of a dedicated Samsung app. And this app is called Smart Switch.
Read on to learn how to make the use of this application on your new Samsung galaxy s20 smartphone.

After specifying the connection method, choose your old device type and then follow the rest of the onscreen commands to instigate data transfer.
When transferring content via USB connection, your old device must be connected to the USB cable first. But if you have a Lightning to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C cable, a USB-OTG adapter won’t be necessary because it will plug right away into your new galaxy s20.
Once your devices are connected, open Smart Switch on both phones. Tap the option to Send data on your old phone while tap Receive data on the galaxy s20. Then tap Cable on both phones to prompt Smart switch to start scanning the old device for transferrable content. To complete the transfer, just follow the rest of the on-screen commands.
If you only got a few files to transfer, wired transfer would be a better option. But if you’ve got a bulk of files to transfer, wireless or cloud transfer is recommended.
If for some reason you couldn’t transfer content via Smart Switch with a USB cable, check and ensure that both ends of the cable are tightly plugged in and that the cable is functional.
As recommended, use the USB-OTG adapter that came with your Galaxy phone to ensure compatibility.
If problems or errors are encountered when trying to transfer content wirelessly through Smart Switch, check and ensure that your internet connection is working stable and that both devices are connected to the internet. For better and faster connection, connect to the internet via Wi-Fi network.
You can also use Smart Switch to transfer content to your galaxy s20 with external storage or SD card.
